The Joy Of Childhood

June 25, 2020 by

This is something I loved to do as a child – ride a pony bareback. So I have painted a variation of this picture for each of our three grandsons, with a new pony and a different boy each time.

Why does this image recur again and again? Because it’s a symbol of the joy and freedom of true childhood.

It doesn’t matter that we may not be able to let our children ride a horse with no saddle or bridle. Whatever they are doing, children need to be protected from harm and yet we must still allow them to be as daring as possible.

Let their hearts be happy and unselfconscious, knowing themselves to be a small part of a mighty creation, and that God’s warm sunlight shines down on them too. This will strengthen them to fight for the good, in a time of great upheaval.

art I painted this boy while living at Danthonia, a Bruderhof in Australia. The kangaroos vanishing in the background are just visible.
