About Us:
In 2017 we started our first Bruderhof house in Brisbane, Australia’s third largest city. An urban home gives us a place from which to connect with numerous people from all walks of life, while providing accommodation for uni students and young adults, and their house parents.

Our waterfront home is located in the suburb of Chelmer, on the south bank of the Brisbane River. It’s an area known for classic “Queenslander”-style architecture – think high-set timber homes with corrugated iron roofs, wrap-around verandas and wide stairs – and tree-lined streets.

Connecting with Neighbors:
Friends and neighbors are always welcome at our house, and we enjoy getting to know the families and residents around us in this beautiful part of the city. Students from our community attend several universities and TAFE campuses across Brisbane, and their classmates regularly stop by to join us for a meal, communal activity, or bible study.

Point of Interest:
In the evening, we love sitting on the dock that runs from our backyard into the river. It’s a great place for a chat or a sing-along, while dangling a line in the water to hook an occasional catfish or shark (swimming is not recommended!).

Residents’ Voices:
Several current residents describe life at Brisbane Community:

Darren Shirky

Darren: I’m a first-year student of dentistry at the University of Queensland. When I’m not busy with uni or work, I like to volunteer at the Wesley Mission or the local Salvation Army op shop. I and the others at our house love exploring what subtropical Brisbane has to offer, from rainforests to world-famous beaches (Surfer’s Paradise is just down the road!). But more than that, we love meeting people, so if you’re up for dinner or a coffee, get in touch. We'd love to show you what we've learned about living in Christian community here in Brisbane, and hear your stories too.

Katherine Zimmerman

Katherine: When I’m not studying nursing, I enjoy getting out and about in Brisbane. It’s such an easy city to navigate – the river ferries are a great way to get around, and there are so many public parks and recreational spaces. It’s never hard to strike up a conversation and make a new friend.
